Being the son of an NHRA legend isn't easy, but Brandon Bernstein makes it work - and the second generation in the family dynasty is doing just fine.
Brandon, whose father Kenny Bernstein is a six-time NHRA champion, has 18 victories in the NHRA (tied for 10th most in the Top Fuel category, six spots behind his father). Brandon's career start was the greatest beginning to any Top Fuel or Funny Car career in the history of the sport.
And 2010 is the start of another step on his journey as Kenny Bernstein Racing is sponsored for the first time by Copart.
Brandon grew up watching his father put together his Motorsports Hall of Fame career.
After graduating from high school, Brandon worked part-time for his father's racing team - Kenny Bernstein Racing was sponsored by Budweiser for a record 30 years - while attending Texas A&M University. Following his graduation in 1996, he worked full-time with the team until 2001.
That year he split his time - driving an Alcohol Dragster for the Darien and Meadows team and working part-time for Kenny Bernstein Racing team.
As a driver, he won the Division 7 championship, "Driver of the Year" honors and was fourth in the national Alcohol Dragster competition. Brandon and Kenny made history in April 2001, when they each won at the SummittRacing.com Nationals - becoming the first father/son duo in NHRA history to win at the same national event. They repeated the feat two months later in Chicago, then Brandon switched back to working as a non-driving crew member on his father's team in 2002.
Brandon got his Top Fuel license on Oct. 14, 2002, and the following year saw the greatest Top Fuel or Funny Car career start in NHRA history. Brandon, a rookie behind the wheel of the Bernstein Budweiser/Lucas Oil dragster, won three of his first eight events and led the Top Fuel standings until a spectacular crash on May 18 at Englishtown, N.J., sidelined him for the season. He still won the "Rookie of the Year" award from motor sports journalists.
His career was rolling. In 2004, he set the NHRA world speed record of 333.41 mph in Chicago. In 2005, he won two national events, and added four victories and three runner-up finishes in 2006 - finishing third in the point standings.
In 2007, Brandon won five events and was in contention for the Top Fuel Championship, finishing third. In 2008, he reached the final round four times, but finished seventh in the point standings. In 2009, his final year with Budweiser, he won one title and finished fifth in the Top Fuel standings.
In 2010, Brandon has sights set high - looking for more victories and a shot at a Top Fuel title.
Brandon is looking to continue his climb on the all-time NHRA lists for appearances in the finals and wins. The second generation of the Bernstein dynasty is making his own mark on this great sport.

When your nickname is "The King," you better be great - and Kenny Bernstein fits that bill as one of the greatest drag racers and race team owners in history.
Whether it's breaking speed barriers, winning 69 NHRA events or being the only team owner to win on U.S. racing's three major circuits, Kenny Bernstein is The King. And with son Brandon Bernstein doing the driving for Kenny Bernstein Racing, he continues to add to his legacy as one of the most influential people in racing history - this year with the sponsorship of Copart Racing.
Kenny began his pro career in the late 1960s, driving Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars in his native Texas and occasionally on the national scene. In 1973, he reached the Funny Car finals at the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona, Calif., but through most of the decade, he focused on business ventures - including his Chelsea Street Pubs.
But racing was always on the radar and in 1978 Kenny returned to racing. A year later, he became a full-time professional driver - winning the IHRA title and the NHRA Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge, La. A brilliant career was off to the races.
In 1980, he began an association with Budweiser - the longest-running sponsorship in the history of motor sports - and headed toward a dynasty.
By the mid-1980s, he arrived. Kenny won the NHRA Funny Car Championship four straight times - from 1985 through 1988 - and in 1990, he switched to the Top Fuel Dragster class, hoping to become the first to break the elusive 300 mph barrier.
It didn't take long to make a mark. He was immediately a contender for the Top Fuel title and he earned the nickname "The King of Speed" when he met his goal, becoming the first NHRA driver to break the 300 mph barrier on March 20, 1992. He was clocked at 301.70 mph during qualifying for the NHRA Gatornationals at Gainesville, Fla. On Oct. 30, 1994, at Pomona, Calif., he was the first to break the 310 mph barrier.
In 1996, Kenny won his first Top Fuel championship - becoming the first NHRA driver to win in both nitro classes.
In 2001, he broke world performance records for speed (332.18 mph) and elapsed time (4.477 seconds). He also set an NHRA record by winning 61 rounds of competition en route to winning the Top Fuel title.
He retired in 2002, handing the driving duties over to his son Brandon. But after Brandon was injured in May 2003, Kenny stepped in and drove in 15 NHRA events, winning four of the last five events that year.
Kenny stepped away in 2004, but staged an NHRA comeback in the Funny Car division in 2007 and finished second in two events. At the end of the season he once again stepped away from the cockpit.
As a champion in two classes, Kenny's career is a tribute to astounding numbers:
- His 39 Top Fuel victories are fourth on the all-time Top Fuel win list - and combined with his 30 Funny Car wins make him No. 2 on the career nitro (Top Fuel and Funny Car) win list.
- His 1,000-plus rounds of competition rank him second on the all-time list of nitro category career rounds.
- He ranks fourth on the all-time Top Fuel wins list and fourth on the all-time Funny Car wins list - and seventh in total NHRA victories.
- Kenny is also a seven-time AARWBA Auto Racing All-American.
But the honors go beyond mere numbers:
- He was voted sixth on the list of the greatest drivers in NHRA's 50-year history.
- He was inducted into the Peterson Publishing Hot Rod Magazine's Hall of Fame as one of the 100 most influential people within the high-performance competition.
- In 2005, he was named one of 12 nominees for the American Auto Racing Writers and Broadcasters Association Newsmaker of the Half-Century award.
- He was inducted into the Texas Motor Sports Hall of Fame in 2006.
- He was inducted into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame - the second driver honored - in 2006.
- In 2008, he was inducted into the Don Garlits International Drag Racing Hall of Fame.
- In 2009, he was inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America.
Meanwhile, his history as an owner is also legendary.
Kenny is the only race team owner to have wins in the NHRA, NASCAR and IndyCar circuits. His King Racing team (with drivers Ricky Rudd and Brett Bodine) raced on the NASCAR circuit in the late 1980s and early 1990s, while King Motorsports (including such drivers as Roberto Guerrero, Johnny Rutherford, Al Unser Sr. and Jim Crawford) raced on the IndyCar circuit.
All the while, he was the owner of Kenny Bernstein Racing, one of the NHRA's top teams.
Whether it's behind the wheel or behind the executive desk, Kenny Bernstein is truly the King.
